JLA gives $3,240 to the only program of its kind in Tarrant County to provide health, social and emotional support to children ages 6-12 that are either HIV positive or live in a home with a family member who is HIV positive. Held at Camp Thurman in Arlington, Camp Firelight is a week long day camp where the children who attend are given an opportunity to take part in social and recreational activites in a fun and supervised wholesome environment that they would not have a chance to experience otherwise.

Students are able to manage mannequin "patients" in routine and distress scenarios and communicate with family members; such as an upset mother. JLA volunteers are invited to become Standardized Patients to play the parts of patients or family members. Training includes learning how to act a part in the various scenarios utilized in classes and how to evaluate the nursing students work with each Standardized Patient.

GRANTS
(funding only)

ALL STAR EQUESTRIAN FOUNDATION

JLA gives $8,061 to this year-round, therapeutic horse back riding program for children of all ages with mental, physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. The program emphasizes the independence and abilities of each rider and provides such benefits as improved muscle strength, balance, trunk and head control and overall gross motor skills. The SureHands lift system for the therapeutic horseback riding program will allow the growing number of riders who exceed the maximum weight limit of two hundred pounds to continue receiving services. The SureHands lift system enables All Star Equestrian to easily mount the heavier more physically challenged riders. Currently there are eighteen+ riders receiving services who exceed the two hundred pound weight limit. Seventy percent of All Stars riders are children.

SAFEHAVEN OF TARRANT COUNTY - CAMPHEART

JLA gives $2,384 to the SafePlay Capital Improvement Project which will increase child safety at the Arlington emergency shelter by replacing the flooring in the currently carpeted gym with a rubberized surface. The rubberized flooring can reduce injuries to ankles, knees and lower backs by providing cushion to playing children.

VOLUNTEERS ONLY

IMMUNIZATION COLLABORATION OF TARRANT COUNTY - SUMMER CLINIC

JLA volunteers serve as event assistants during the summer months. They assist at a one(1) week low cost immunization clinic for 4,000 Tarrant County children (over 30% are from Arlington). Program is designed to entice segments of our community to immunize their children and help reduce the spread of disease by offering them convenient summer hours and reduced rates for required immunizations.

SAFEHAVEN OF TARRANT COUNTY - CAMPHEART

JLA volunteers assist with a therapeutic weekend camping experience for 6-12 year year old victims of family violence. CampHeart is held twice a year over a three-day weekend. This innovative camp effectively accelerates the healing process by offering activities in a non-threatening setting with other children who have had similar experiences. Trained volunteers assist in providing therapeutic and recreational game and activities, as well as individual attention to all the children who attend.
